The Side Door, IS down-home American bar

A new bar recently opened in the heart of Kadena’s Gate 2 Street. “The Side Door was created for the 30-and-up crowd,” says Bill, manager of The Side Door. “It is a place where you can go with a few friends to just kick back a few drinks and have some good conversation.”

Bill has had a long history with Gate 2 Street and currently runs the Hideaway, First Chance and Good Times. He has also helped with Al’s Place and other live houses. “When we opened First Chance and Al’s place, they took on the form of the Hideaway, so we chose to open this bar as just a mellow place to get away from the noise and rush of everyday life,” says Bill. “Here you can hang out and talk to friends. The music is low, and the conversation is higher.”

Open daily from 8:00 p.m. to late, The Side Door is located in the middle of Gate 2 Street, right across from Fujiyama’s. The founding fathers called this place The Side Door because it is off the beaten track. “It’s kind of out of the mainstream. It’s not a pickup bar. It’s kind of an in-between bar where you can be yourself and kick back with a few friends. Whatever customers come in here, we design the bar for them. We want them to be comfortable.”

The Side Door was also built as a getaway for Bill and his friends. “People we drink with can come have a conversation,” he says. “It’s our little hideaway. We didn’t make this place to turn a profit. It’s just a mellow, cozy place where you can have a good time without any hassles or fuss.” The Side Door offers basic domestic beer at very low prices. Five dollars will get you two beers. If that isn’t cheap for a drink on Gate 2 Street, I don’t know where you’ve been! “A lot of our friends come here,” says Bill. “Most people who see me at First Chance come here now. The older crowd used to go to First Chance and we’d drink there, but now they come to this bar.”

The music played at The Side Door is for the thirties-and-up crowd. “We play a lot of sixties, seventies, and eighties rock,” says Bill. “This is a ‘down-home American Bar’ where you can listen to classic rock at a reasonable volume and get service with a smile. This place has a little touch of America and a little touch of home. We’ve also got some of the cutest, friendliest bartenders in the world!”

Bill takes pride in his work for Gate 2 Street. “The point is, if you’re going to do something, do it well. The better the bars, the better the street. We have a good team of individuals working together to make things better for everyone.” Eventually, The Side Door hopes to offer shrimp baskets, clam chowder, gumbo, and fish and chips. Also, if you’d like to throw your own party at The Side Door, reservations are possible. For more information, call 090-5288-4929.

If you’re looking to get away from some of the hustle and bustle of the big city and some of the noise of the strip’s loudest nightclubs and live houses, The Side Door just might be what you’re looking for. Drop by today for a taste of the simple life in a place where you can sit down with your buds and actually have a real conversation.
