Onna Village forerunner for graduate school location

Date Posted: 2003-03-15

Onna Village has emerged as the likeliest candidate for the location of the campus of the new Okinawa Graduate School. Okinawa Development Agency chief Hiroyuki Hosoda is expected to announce a final decision soon, as committee members have now been presented results of surveys of the three finalist locations-Onna Village, Kitanakagusuku and Itoman City.

At a press conference following the eighth meeting of the selection committee, Hosoda said that Onna Village seems to be the favorite. “With plenty of green nature, easy terrain that requires little landscaping and enough space for the campus, Onna Village seems to be the best of the proposed location. But, of course, we are still considering the other two locations also,” Hosoda said. Noting that the committee still has a month’s work ahead, Hosoda said that he plans to announce the final decision in April.

Experts who compiled the surveys said that as far as space was concerned, Onna and Itoman offered about the same amount of space for the construction. The current Awase golf course site in Nakagusuku was clearly the smallest.

“Itoman is closest to the airport, but considering the environment and living conditions on the future campus, the site in Onna Village offered the best option by far,” the experts’ report says. An added and important bonus is that the area in Onna Village has the smallest number of landowners to negotiate with, allowing land acquisition negotiations to be the easiest.
