Earth Day to feature Okinawan musicians

Date Posted: 2001-12-27

Okinawan musician Shokichi Kina and his band Champloose have been invited to perform at the Bob Marley celebration scheduled for Earth Day festivities next April in San Diego, California. The invitation was extended by the World Beat Center of San Diego, a non-profit organization that promotes cultural awareness and peace through music. Center directors explained that an idea put forward by Kina that all weapons should be musical instruments meshed perfectly with the center’s purpose and goals. Kina, for his part, said that he wants to sublimate the soul of “One Love” by Marley into an energy that will change the world. Related events are also scheduled to take place April 29-30 at Okinawa’s Seaside Park in Ginowan, featuring various performers from overseas including Marley’s mother, musician Cedella Malcolm Marley.
