Tamagusuku robbed of cultural heritage

Date Posted: 2001-12-27

Five culturally significant old stones were stolen from the Funakoshi Community Center in Tamagusuku Village on Dec. 17. The rocks, weighing from 35 to 90 kilograms each, had been used by past generations in contests of strength and were on public display so that people could touch them. Katsumori Yakabe of Funakoshi expressed disappointment at the theft, saying that the stones, passed down from the residentsí ancestors, were the cultural heritage of the community and that they could not be replaced with money. He vowed to secure the stonesí return.
