Gas leaks spark LPG tank recall

Date Posted: 2001-12-27

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on Dec. 16 ordered Nansei Oil Company to halt sales of their liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is suspected of containing inorganic mercury, and to collect and replace tanks containing the gas from their customers. The order was issued after gas leaks were detected in three pieces of equipment belonging to company customers between October and December. Investigators found that an abnormal amount of inorganic mercury in the Nansei LPG had corroded aluminum, leading to cracks. In response to the directive, the prefectural gas safety association ordered that 127 distributors selling the LPG to approximately 193,000 private residences collect and replace all of the gas tanks.
