Critical blood shortage spurs request for help

Date Posted: 2001-12-20

The prefectural Red Cross Blood Center has announced a shortage of blood for use in transfusions, stating that as of Dec. 12 only 40 percent of the required amount was on hand. According to the center, their supply of type O blood has reached critical levels, currently standing at only 6 percent of the necessary supply. Demand is heaviest for types O and A in December, and due to the severe shortage the Red Cross has been able to provide blood only in emergencies. Noting the difficulties involved in obtaining blood from other prefectures due to a nationwide shortage, the center is calling on the people of Okinawa for help in rectifying the low supply of blood on the island.
