Underage liquor sales land shop in hot water

Date Posted: 2001-12-20

The Naha Police Department forwarded a report to the Prosecutor's Office on Friday detailing the illegal sale of alcohol to minors by the owner and manager of a local shop. According to the investigation, the 72-year-old store owner and its 42-year-old manager are suspected of having sold liquor to students under the age of 20 and are being charged with violation of the law that prohibits juveniles from consuming alcohol. The police report states that the shop manager allegedly sold two bottles of awamori to a 17-year-old student. Claiming that the store was busy, the manager reportedly failed to check the student's identification despite the fact that he was suspicious about the purchaser's age. The owner, who is currently president of the prefectural association of alcohol retailers, was out of the shop at the time.
