4,200-kilometer trek ends at Peace Park

Date Posted: 2001-12-20

A 28-year-old U.S. man completed his journey on foot across Japan on Friday at the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman City. Starting his trek in Hokkaido in 1999, Gregory Michael covered 4,200 kilometers, walking a total of 304 days over the past three years. While doing graduate studies in Tokyo, Michael had been taken on as a reporter for the World School Network, a Tokyo-based NGO that provides environmental studies via the Internet. As a result, he started walking, studying the benefits of living with nature through interviews with farmers and fishermen everywhere he went. Stating that he had met as many people over the past three years as he would normally meet in 20 years, Michael said he wants to practice in his daily life all that he learned in his travels. The young American's travel journal and the knowledge he gathered about living in harmony with nature can be viewed at www.wschool.net.
