Okinawa City demands pullout of Japanese police at bases

Date Posted: 2001-12-13

A special investigative committee in Okinawa City decided on Tuesday to submit a proposal to the city assembly calling for the early withdrawal of riot police dispatched from mainland Japan to tighten security at U.S. bases on the island. Citing a contradiction perceived by the public in that Japanese police were guarding armed U.S. soldiers, Committee Chairman Asachio Kuwae stated that the increased police presence was causing traffic jams and negatively affecting tourism, giving the impression that Okinawa was a dangerous place to visit. The proposal is expected to be passed by the local assembly, after which it will be sent to the government of Japan, the prime minister, the National Police Agency and the Public Safety Commission.
