Competition heats up in annual scramble for Adults’ Day seats

Young people about to officially become adults have been engaged in a fierce competition since the middle of November to secure seats at the New Year's rice cake-cutting ceremony scheduled for January’s Adults’ Day festivities at the Naha City gymnasium. This past year’s Adults’ Day ceremony turned into a chaotic scene, with participants destroying part of the gymnasium. Despite the efforts on the part of organizers, which also include members of the younger generation, to improve the upcoming ceremony, things are not working out as planned. According to Board of Education officials, high school students hang around the gym carrying food, cardboard boxes and blankets to reserve space. Some of them said they had been ordered to do so by their senpai, or seniors.
