Students use public phones to contact dating services

Date Posted: 2001-12-13

The Prefectural Board of Education recently reported the results of a questionnaire completed by junior high school students in Okinawa last September regarding the use of mobile phones to call telephone dating services, which are believed to promote sexual and drug abuse. According to the board’s report, approximately 2,500 students, or 5 percent of total respondents, of which about three-quarters were female, said they had made a call to a dating service because it sounded like fun. Thirty-seven percent answered that they would never even consider using the service, and the rest were unsure. The questionnaire indicated that 14 percent of the students carry beepers, 14 percent use mobile phones, primarily for talking with friends, and that most students use public phones for calling the dating services.
