Environmentalists slam landfill, propose alternative uses for Awase tideland

Date Posted: 2001-12-13

An environmental group involved in giving residents a legal say in an Okinawa City landfill project hosted a symposium at Kariyushien on Saturday to discuss alternative plans for the site. Six of the groupís environmentalists voiced opinions and suggested ways to more appropriately utilize the Awase tideland, which is scheduled to become a landfill site. Noting that people were already surrounded by too much artificiality, one speaker insisted that the way of thinking about the entire project needed to be completely revised. Others charged that the voice of the people had been suppressed due to the superior organizational abilities of the landfillís proponents. It was also proposed that the tideland be considered a valuable natural resource that can be instrumental in eco-education as well as an excellent tourist destination for eco-tours. The group is currently working on legislation that will give residents the ability to vote on the merits and desirability of the landfill project.
