Veteran returns 1945 Iheya Island photos to Okinawa

Date Posted: 2001-12-13

Shizuo Kishaba, a member of the Ryukyu America Historical Research Society, has obtained 86 photographs and approximately 380 negatives taken by a U.S. soldier from April to June 1945 on Iheya and other islands in Okinawa. War veteran Alfred Perokin kept the pictures all these years for a friend of his who had produced the photos at a time when it was illegal to do so except for military reasons. As a result, they are valuable images that reflect the daily lifestyle of the Okinawan people and islandís physical appearance at the time. The pictures will be exhibited at the Kitanakagusuku Village Community Center in May of next year and will then be presented to Iheya Village officials by Perokin in June. They will be also displayed at www.melfirst.co.jp/ryubei/ryubei_j/menu.html, the societyís Web site.
