Okinawan woman to compete in international design competition

Date Posted: 2001-12-13

An Okinawan woman was selected to be one of 10 representatives from Japan to move on to the final round of an international fashion design competition to be held on Dec.13 in Paris. A student at Ishadou fashion design school, 23-year-old Aya Arakawa created a colorful one-piece outfit made of fabric that she herself had dyed, decorated and beaded. She was selected from about 3,000 applicants from all over Japan. Arakawa switched her career goals from painter to fashion designer a year and a half ago because she wanted to mix elements of drawing with textile design. Her biggest challenge now is to sharpen her basic sewing skills.
