Foreign wedding the first on Zamami in 26 years

Date Posted: 2001-12-13

The first wedding ceremony in 26 years took place on Zamami Island last Sunday when villagers celebrated the nuptials of two Australians living on the island. Twenty-nine-year-old David Biat and his wife Jenny came to Zamami Island last year to work as assistant English teachers. They got engaged and were officially married in October in Australia, but villagers decided to organize a local wedding celebration for the couple as well. Dressed in traditional Ryukyu wedding attire, the couple first prayed for love at a sacred site on the island and then proceeded to the wedding reception, where villagers put on a display of traditional entertainment in keeping with local custom.
