Capricciosa Italian Restaurant

Located in Chatan Town’s popular Mihama area, Capricciosa Italian restaurant serves up some of the most appetizing Italian food found anywhere on Okinawa. Capricciosa has three claims to fame: They use only imported Italian tomato based-sauce in their dishes, they serve very generous portions, and the flavor of each dish is based on southern Italian home cooking.

There are currently four Capricciosa franchises in Okinawa, but the restaurant in Mihama has been open for the past three years. The chain first opened in Okinawa five years ago and has become quite popular with foreigners and locals alike. One point of interest is that everything on the menu is served in large plates or bowls, allowing customers to share. So, each customer eats only as much as they want and what they want. The restaurant is very informal and has a casual atmosphere but is classy in its own way. Menus are bilingual, and there are over 40 dishes to choose from.

Starting Dec. 10 Capricciosa is offering a special Christmas meal for two people for ¥3,980. This includes smoked turkey and hot winter vegetable salad, bread under tomato and basil with olive oil, Italian vegetable and meat soup, your choice of a spaghetti listed on the menu, chicken stew with winter vegetables cooked with red wine, strawberry or vanilla ice cream and two glasses of champagne.

The restaurant also offers a Wai-Wai set for four people, an Uki-Uki set for two and an Italian lunch for one person. The Wai-Wai set includes a pizza of choice, salad of choice, spaghetti of choice, Sicilian rice croquette with savory meat sauce, ice cream and homemade cake, four drinks of choice and free coffee or tea after the meal. The set has a value of ¥7,810 but is offered for only ¥5,980. We tried this set and it was delicious, but very large. Come with an empty stomach! I especially enjoyed the Sicilian rice croquette with savory meat sauce. It was a big ball of rice with cheese and meat cooked around the outside. Delicious! As our pizza, we had the largest calzone I have ever seen. We chose spaghetti with tomato sauce and garlic as our pasta. Though extremely hungry when we showed up at Capricciosa, we were unable to finish the meal. It was delicious, but the amount of food was a feast in itself.

The Uki-Uki set includes smoked salmon salad or sweet potato and calamari salad, a pizza or spaghetti of choice, ice cream and homemade cake, and two drinks of choice. The set has a ¥4,100 value but is offered for only ¥3,180. The Italian lunch is a generous meal for one person and is served from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for only ¥830.

All in all, Capricciosa just became one of my favorite restaurants. It is very difficult to find a restaurant with such great portions, but the meals are not only very filling, they are delicious as well. The restaurant is currently looking for American bilingual waitresses. If interested and fluent enough in Japanese to take orders, call 098-926-0606.

Adjacent to the 7-plex theater in Mihama and next to Tony Roma’s, Capricciosa is open every day from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

On a side note, Tony Roma’s is also offering a Christmas special. From December 1 to 31, you can get a dish of Cajun shrimp broth for only ¥1,380, chase-limogere brut for ¥2,950, or for ¥3,280 you can purchase the steamed king crab and ribs with bread and a side dish. If you order the steamed king crab and ribs dish, you will also get a special Tony Roma’s calendar with many coupons for future visits.
