Kokusai rejuvenation eyed in 1.6 billion land deal

Date Posted: 2001-12-07

Food wholesaler GIMA Inc. purchased a plot of land on Kokusai Street in Naha on Nov. 13 for the purpose of constructing a major new building complex intended to revitalize the downtown area. The Urasoe City food company paid Okinawa Yamagataya a total of 1.6 billion for the 3,300-square-meter piece of real estate. The former owner has agreed to demolish the building that currently stands on the site. Using the sale to pursue his dream of revitalizing the downtown area, company president Keita Gima said that the Kokusai district is not only attractive but is also well known even outside of Okinawa and that he intends to begin construction as soon as blueprints are finalized. Gima plans to build a building complex that would host hotels, offices and restaurants, drawing both tourists and residents into the area.
