Prefecture announces 19.4% decline in tourism for October

Date Posted: 2001-12-07

The Prefectural Bureau of Tourism and Resorts announced on Nov. 30 that the number of visitors to Okinawa in October had dropped and that the November results were expected to show the same downward trend. Tourists visiting the island in October numbered 303,400, a 19.4 percent decrease from the same month last year, believed to be a direct result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. Figures for November are expected to show a 31.4 percent decrease as well, reflecting the large number of school trip cancellations stemming from the attacks. The total number of tourists coming to Okinawa this year is estimated at 4.38 million, approximately 300,000 less than predicted. The accompanying loss in tourism revenue to the islands is expected to reach about 25 billion.
