Police car chasing motorcycle fatally hits pedestrian

Date Posted: 2003-03-08

A police car engaged in pursuit of two boys on a motorcycle struck and killed a pedestrian trying to cross a street Feb. 27. The victim suffered severe head injuries, and died in a hospital four days after the crash without regaining consciousness.

The boys had been driving their motorcycle zigzagging on the street, causing several traffic disturbances

According to Ginowan Police, a 23-year-old police officer was driving a patrol car as the officers tried to stop the two young boys on a motorcycle who had been reportedly causing trouble on Route 330. The officer was reportedly driving to the side of the motorcycle, paying little attention to what was in front of the car, when a man tried to cross the street from right to left. The patrol car hit the man, who fell and hit his head on the pavement.

Ginowan Police Chief Kiyoharu Hidaka has apologized for the incident. “We are very sorry that this accident happened. Our officer was not careful enough, and perhaps not experienced enough to handle the situation safely. We will train our officers vigorously to better protect people and prevent accidents in the future,” Hidaka said.
