Double Circle 2001 in Ryukyu - 3 day beach party

Not since Moondance in April 2001 has an event been looked forward to with such anticipation by the general techno fan base on Okinawa. Since word started spreading through the party grapevine a few months ago about the “Double Circle 2001 in Ryukyu” three-day event, fans of the genre have been scrambling for what little information they could find. Finally, the facts are ready to be released. Moondance was a great party, but this just might take the cake for best event of 2001.

“Double Circle 2001 in Ryukyu” will be held from Friday afternoon, Nov. 30, through Sunday morning, Dec. 2, near Kokusai Koryu Mura near Kin Town. This three-day event will be held on the beach and will feature 24 musical acts from mainland Japan and Okinawa including DJs, bands and a live sanshin and Ryukyu dance performance. Prices for the event are astonishingly low -- ¥2,000 includes admission, parking, camping, toilets and showers. All you really have to bring is your tent, clothes, food and drinks. As ticket prices are very reasonable, Yoichi Teruya, the owner of bar Cuss Cuss near Kokusai Street in Naha City and organizer of Double Circle 2001, says he is unsure how many tickets have been sold so far but is expecting close to 1,000 people to show up at the party.

Yoichi decided to do this party because of his past experience with another good event and the people who organized it. Ten years ago he lived in Tokyo and joined the Kanisaka Festival, a music event. Back then, people didn’t know what raves were, and the turnout was very small; only 15 friends showed up. However, over time, the party got bigger and bigger and had over 1,200 people in attendance a few years ago. The reason Yoichi decided to organize the Double Circle rave is because organizers of the Kanisaka Festival were mainly in their thirties when they planned it out for the first time, Yoichi being the youngest in his twenties. Now that he has reached his thirties, he wants to do sort of the same thing, but on Okinawa.

Many great techno parties are always taking place on Okinawa, but one thing that makes this party so special is that it is being organized by a local and is not part of a Japan tour. Many Okinawan organizers regularly throw parties, but rarely on this scale. The Moondance party went down in history as one of the best parties of 2001, but a mainland Japan crew organized it. This party, on the other hand, is completely Okinawan.

Tickets to “Double Circle 2001 in Ryukyu” are being sold at Bar Cuss Cuss, Shanti Shanti on Kadena Gate 2 Street, Get Happy Records, Rim Shot and Freee-k show. For more information, tickets, and driving directions in English, visit GrooveSeeker at www.gsv2.com
