Date Posted: 2001-11-29

The Prefectural Board of Education has recently published the results of a poll on anxiety and corporal punishment. This was the first time such a survey was conducted, and it included all public school teachers. The results were disclosed at the board’s regular meeting on Wednesday. According to the report approximately 70 percent of teachers believe that corporal punishment is a part of education, expressing the view that there are some students who do not heed their superiors without such punishment. Regarding its effectiveness, those surveyed were almost evenly divided for and against. In addition a large number of teachers indicated that relationships devoid of mutual trust between students and teachers were the cause of corporal punishment being imposed.
