Novel plan to attract visitors to Gushigami unveiled

Date Posted: 2001-11-29

Officials in Gushigami Village are working on a unique program that features stays at currently vacant family homes and hands-on experiences that will allow visitors to enjoy the pleasant atmosphere and natural beauty of the village. By providing an opportunity to live in local houses, become involved with townspeople and utilize local resources, the village is seeking a new way to enable its farmers and fishermen to earn cash.

Calling for a three-year promotion period beginning this year, the project will cost ¥54 million and will be covered primarily by subsidies from the national and prefectural governments. During the project’s first meeting held at the end of October, village officials outlined plans to offer tours that will allow participants to experience farming, fishing and activities such as rock climbing, as well as attend history and culture lectures. The ideas floated included a proposal to use vacant homes belonging to farmers and fishermen for accommodation. Proponents of the plan feel that the village’s main attraction lies in its natural and undeveloped surroundings and that with the cooperation of the villagers, the area will be revitalized and once again attract people.
