Date Posted: 2001-11-21
Members of the local Indian community celebrated “Happy Diwali” or the Indian New Year, on Nov. 14 in the Hindu Temple located in Awase. The Indian community in Okinawa is the third largest in Japan after Tokyo and Kobe consisting of 150 people in 40 families. Most first generation Indian residents in Okinawa are owners of small businesses located on Gate 2 Street area outside KAB Gate 2, but younger second and third generation Indians are increasingly working in larger companies. The community is very tight and all attend several traditional Indian festivals they organize throughout the year.
