Fifth Annual Gate 2 Fest

Date Posted: 2001-11-21

The fifth annual Gate 2 Fest is finally here! This weekend, on Sunday, many people will crowd the area outside Kadena Air Base Gate 2 for a day of music, motorcycles, and lots of fun. This annual festival attracts motorcycle groups and fanatics from all over Japan and has many events that promise to be fun for the whole family, not just for big, tough bikers.

During the festivities, Gate 2 Street will be closed to four-wheeled traffic, so your best bet will be to park inside Kadena Gate 2 or in one of the surrounding parking lots. There will be three stages at the event with Stage 1 being used as the main stage and for acoustic music, stage 2 used for rock and roll, and stage 3 as the venue for Ranchiki Nights vol. 5. Ranchiki Nights is an indies event held every few months in Hamby Town, but it will be held on Gate 2 Street for this event.

On stage 1, a taiko performance will start at 1:45 p.m., followed by an opening ceremony at 2:00 p.m. with the Japanese Self-Defense Force (JSDF) acoustic band playing at 4 p.m., followed by a bike awards ceremony starting at 5:30 p.m. Stage 1 will be located near the Gate 2 Street, Route 330 intersection. From stage 1 to stage 2, a parade by the JSDF starts at 2:20 p.m., followed by a motorcycle parade at 3 p.m., and an eisa performance with four groups at 7 p.m.

An obstacle relay race with beer and cola will be held from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., a hot dog eating contest takes place in front of Zazoo bakery and soba eating contest in front of the festival headquarters will go from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A karate and arm wrestling contest will go from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the Koza recycling shop. On stage 2, various rock bands will perform from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on stage 3, Ranchiki Nights vol. 5 will kick off at 4 p.m. and include bands Tatsuya Tasuda, Maruroku, Chuckwow, SSD, Porkey’s Band, and DJs Taka, Gushikenni, and Do-tika.

A campground for visiting bikers is arranged from Friday, Nov. 23, through noon on Sunday, Nov. 25 at Inbu Beach. The entry fee for the beach is ¥500 for adults and ¥300 for children, but if you want to camp, the fee is ¥700 for adults and ¥500 for kids. Free food and beer is offered on Saturday night starting at 6 p.m., and a free breakfast is offered on Sunday morning from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. To reach Inbu Beach, drive past Manza Beach on Highway 58 and look for the Harley Davidson banner. Camp organizers are asking that visitors keep their campsite clean and not start campfires. Also, please don’t drink and drive. Gates to the beach will be closed to incoming and outgoing traffic at 10 p.m., so be sure to arrive early.

If you would like to register your bike for the Gate 2 Fest, call Ryukyu Custom Cycles at 098-921-0257 or 098-921-4417 before November 24. All bikers are welcome to register.
