Poll finds residents against tideland project

Date Posted: 2001-11-21

The Okinawa Times newspaper conducted a telephone poll among residents of Okinawa City over the weekend concerning the controversial reclamation project of Awase tideland. The poll was a joint effort with Asahi Newspaper and Ryukyu Asahi Broadcasting Co. The poll showed that 57 percent of the residents are against the plan, and only 24 percent are in favor. The poll also revealed that most people think that there should be a popular vote on the matter. They also think that more explanation from the government should be in order. The poll proved false the government’s claim that the majority of the residents agree with the project and thus giver the government a mandate to proceed with it.

Most people who disagreed answered that the reason is because the tideland would be lost. The majority of people also doubt once the project gets on way the environment would be damaged.
