Young candidates trump at Itoman Assy election

The election of Itoman City assembly members took place Sunday. Of the twenty-seven members up for election, a total of thirteen candidates won for the first time. Three of the first time assembly members represent the Communist Party, three are from the Komei Party, one is form the Social Democratic Party, one from the Liberal Democratic Party. The rest of the candidates are independent.

The poll was also marked by the appearance of the younger generation. The candidate who cornered most votes, 1280 of them, was a 26-year-old university student Shin Shingaki who studies at Okinawa University. He became the youngest assembly member ever in the history of Itoman City. He pledged to bring the voice of the younger generation to the city government. 39,579 eligible voters or 75.9 percent of the electorate cast ballots in the election.
