Special allocation granted to improve employment

Date Posted: 2001-11-21

The national government in Tokyo decided Friday to distribute 7 billion to Okinawa from the emergency special budget allocation that aims for creating local employment opportunities. Okinawa has been promised to receive about twice as much as other prefectures that are allocated money according to their population. That fact reflects the high unemployment rate in the prefecture that is almost double the national average, and the recent slump in tourism.

The Prefecture will set up a foundation that will dispense the money in grants, creating job opportunities for an estimated eight thousand people in three years. In principle, the money will be used for government work that is possible to be shifted to private firms.
