First tank in new aquarium at Expo complete

One of the biggest water tanks in the world was completed and its filling with seawater started on Thursday at the new aquarium at the Expo Park in Motobu Town. The new facility is scheduled to open in fall of 2002. The now completed tank will house a display called “the Journey to the Tropics” and is one of five large-scale tanks in the new aquarium facility. It is 36 meters long, 27 meters wide and 10 meters deep, and it holds 7,500 tons of water, making it the largest indoor water tank in Japan.

After the tank is filled to 1.3 meters high it will be inspected for leaks and drained again for possible repairs. This is expected to take ten days. After that it will be filled at a rate of one meter a day, and the filling is expected to be complete around Dec. 17. The big aquarium is planned to house a whale shark, manta, tuna and other large fish.
