EM Technology, or Effective Microorganism Technology, is a relatively new field that has caught on in the past few years in an effort to create a more ideal society by using a combination of various beneficial, naturally occurring microorganisms in a variety of applications. On November 17 and 18, EM Festa 2001, the 18th Conference on Applications and Research of EM will take place at the Okinawa Convention Center.

Organized by the EM Research Organization, Inc (EMRO), and jointly hosted by WHO Association of Japan, this conference will include oral presentations, a panel discussion, technical sessions, a student contest on environmental studies with EM, and a keynote speech by Professor T. Higa. For more information, contact the Secretariat of EMRO at 098-890-5123, fax 098-890-1122, or check them out on the web at www.em-festa.com. This Festival is free to the public and is an excellent chance to hear how EM Technology can improve your lifestyle. Following is the schedule for EM Festa 2001:

Oral Presentations @ Major Hall [11/17-18 10am 12pm]
Panel Discussion @ Major Hall [11/17 3:30pm 5pm]
Keynote speech by Prof. T. Higa @ Major Hall [11/18 3:30pm 5pm]
Technical sessions @ Conference Hall [11/17-18 12:30pm 3:30pm]
Students contest: Environmental studies with EM @ Exhibition Hall [11/17-18 10am 6pm]

Another EM conference is taking place on the same day at the same site. The 1st EM Medical International Conference will be held on Nov. 17 and 18 at the Conference Hall in the Okinawa Convention Center. For more information, check out www.EMmedicalNet.com. Also, an EM Banquet be held at the Laguna Garden Hotel on November 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and admission is 7,000 in advance or 8,000 at the door.

So, what is EM? The EM Research Organization (EMRO) was founded in 1994 on Okinawa, Japan. It is an organization with a team of 100 researchers around the world conducting research in different fields to uncover viable solutions for existing environmental and health problems by promoting and disseminating EM Technology around the globe. EM is a new technology with uses in animal husbandry, environment, agriculture, construction, health, industry, and everyday life. It is a combination of various beneficial microorganisms that secrete substances such as vitamins, organic acids, chelated minerals, and antioxidants when in contact with organic matter. In agriculture, these microorganisms change disease-inducing soil into disease-suppressing soil, which then has the capability to transform into azymogene soil. This process improves soil contents and is capable of sustaining high quality food production.

EM Technology has also proven very beneficial for fish farming and is very popular in the poultry industry. EM is helpful in reducing unpleasant taste in meat and milk products that are sometimes caused by medication or certain feeds, and helps recycle polluted water into clean water. EM also converts waste into harmless and useful products quickly. Where decomposition of waste usually takes several months, with the assistance of EM it takes only 4 to 6 weeks. In everyday life, EM Technology can be used as an odor remover, protection from fungus, detergent alternative in washing machines, and in gardens and lawns to grow flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

There are several other everyday uses for this technology. For more information, visit the EM conferences at the Convention Center. EM Technology is certainly an interesting topic. With as many unique applications as these microorganisms have, this event is sure to turn a few heads and open a few eyes.
