Naha City tourism trade still struggling

Date Posted: 2001-11-15

As of November 5, the number of tourists who had cancelled their trips to Naha City reached 152,955. Even though the government has started a tourism campaign encouraging people to travel and stating that Okinawa is completely safe, Naha city tourism officials are struggling to find out how to bring back the visitors.

A lady at a souvenir shop at Naha’s Kokusai Street said that sales had decreased more than thirty percent. She claimed that as the military bases in Okinawa and the tourism cannot live together, the bases should move to somewhere else. Other area merchants said that even though low interest financing is important, it means nothing if tourists don’t come to Okinawa. “Why don’t they reduce the price of an air ticket down to a half,” she said. Another merchant stated that the school graduation trip season is already over. “Why couldn’t they take measures earlier,” she demanded.
