Okinawa economic emergency package unveiled

Responding to the current slump in tourism and the severe unemployment in Okinawa, the central government in Tokyo took special emergency measures, Thursday. The measures center around four major elements that are tourism and industry development, creation of employment opportunities and improved education.

In concrete terms, the measures include plans to urge research and development in cooperation with industries, schools and government in order to produce new industries and to develop local conventional businesses. The measures also include plans to subsidize school graduation trips to Okinawa and to establish a contact center to support people who are looking for jobs. The total budget for these projects will be as much as 10 billion.
