Naha monorail test runs to start in December

Date Posted: 2001-11-15

The Prefectural Department of Civil Engineering and Construction announced that it would start test runs of the Okinawa urban monorail, commonly called Yui Rail, from Dec. 4 using a prototype car between Naha Airport and Oroku station.

Yui Rail is scheduled to start regular runs in 2003. The rail will have total of fifteen stations between Naha Airport and Shuri, a stretch of thirteen kilometers. The cost of tickets would start at 260, with 30 added at every third stop. Thus, the whole distance from Airport to Shuri would cost 380 one way.

The testing will continue until the end of January in order to make sure everything functions as planned. After the testing is completed the rest of twenty-two cars will be built.
