Former governor Junji Nishime dies

Date Posted: 2001-11-15

The former governor of Okinawa, Naha City mayor and House of Representatives assembly member, Junji Nishime died on Saturday of an acute cardiac infarction at the age of eighty.

Nishime fought for the development of Okinawa after the World War II, and for solving the problems with the U.S. military bases. Nishime was the father of the current House of Representatives member, Junshiro Nishime.

In the 50s, Nishime put a great effort into collecting signatures demanding Okinawa’s reversion to Japan, and was elected an assembly member of the Ryukyu government. He also demanded for establishing an electoral system to choose the governor and more rights for Okinawa’s citizens. After serving as a director and Naha mayor, he was elected into the House of Representatives in 1970. In 1978, he became the governor of Okinawa, established the Prefectural College of Art. He also realized the first Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival and oversaw the construction of the new Okinawa Prefectural Office during his tenure of twelve years.
