Cargo companies experiment with integrated delivery

Date Posted: 2001-11-08

Five firms dealing with air cargo started a joint transport experiment from Nov. 1. The experiment is scheduled to last one month and is organized by the Okinawa Prefecture Trucking Association. The aim is to reduce environmental damage caused by heavy traffic and exhaust gases. The firms hope to establish an effective system of transportation and that would reduce the number of trucks running on the prefecture’s streets at any given time.

During the experiment, each firm brought their cargo to one central location where it is separated according to destination. The partners then jointly transport the cargo to recipients, instead of each firm delivering with their own trucks. Integrating the trucking routes makes effective transportation possible. The first time a similar system was used on a trial basis in Nago area last year, the number of items delivered per truck increased by 58 percent.
