Wife beating husband ordered to stay away

Date Posted: 2001-11-08

The Naha District Court ordered a man in his forties to stay away from his wife for six months, Monday, and to stay away from his home for two weeks. The wife had sought the court protection order based on the Domestic Violence Prohibition Law.

At the trial, the wife said that she feared that her husband would continuously behave violently as she claimed that she had been the victim of his violent acts on several occasions in the past. This is the first protection order by the court in Okinawa based on a new law. If the husband violates the order, he will face a sentence of up to one year imprisonment or a fine of up to ¥1 million. The court also ordered the Prefectural police to patrol around the wife’s house.

According to the police investigation, the husband used violence against his wife on Oct. 25, leaving her with an injury that took five days to fully heal. The police had arrived at the scene of the fight and arrested the man, but he was released on Monday after the court issued an informal order. When questioned by the police, the husband reportedly wondered what is wrong with beating up one’s wife. The wife told investigators that her husband had behaved violently continuously since 1992 because disagreements over disciplining their children. He had even broken several of her ribs several years ago.
