Police officer drives 15 years without license

Date Posted: 2001-11-08

A sergeant of the Prefectural riot police investigator squad had been driving police vehicles for fifteen years without a valid driverís license. He had been ordered to resign from his post in 1997.

The Prefectural Police Department did not arrest the officer, nor was his dismissal made public. Police Sgt Hideto Ueta of the same department said the dismissal was a proper punishment, as the sergeant had not been driving for eight months at the time because of an injury. He also said that it would have been difficult to make a case in the court against the sergeant.

According to the police, the sergeant joined the police force in 1980. He did not renew his driving license in í82, when it expired. He was stationed at three different police stations, and was placed in the squad of riot police investigators in 1996. At that time he submitted a copy of his wifeís driving license with his picture, name and date of birth attached. He continued driving police cars and nobody noticed.

In 1997 when the police general affairs section applied for a so called gold driving license for him that is issued to drivers that have no traffic law violations, the expiration was finally found.
