Cabinet Minister, students find Okinawa different

Date Posted: 2001-11-02

The Minister of Education and Science, Atsuko Toyama visited Shuri Castle, Friday, while she was on an inspection tour on Okinawa. Toyama concluded that Okinawa is as calm as ever, and locals are in high spirits welcoming tourists.

The Minister talked with students from Kanagawa prefecture touring the Shuri Castle. The students said that they knew of other schools that had decided not go to Okinawa, but were quick to add that it is not as crazy in Okinawa as they thought.

Meanwhile, students of a high school from Saitama Prefecture decided to visit Okinawa especially during this time as a part of their peace education. 120 students from the school visited a hill overlooking the Kadena Air Base on Thursday. A guide from a peace organization, Sakae Yamauchi expects that this would be a great opportunity for students from mainland Japan to seriously think about the war. She said that students really couldn’t get such feeling on mainland apart from news reports on TV. The students said that watching flight operations on Kadena Air Base they could feel the war very closely, recognizing that there are so many things to think about.
