Bar, restaurant operators biggest tax dodgers

Date Posted: 2001-11-02

Private firms in the prefecture have failed to pay income taxes totaling over 10.8 billion during the year starting from July last year, Okinawa National Tax Office reported on Friday. It is the largest amount ever recorded. The office stated that in most cases the failure to pay the taxes was not intentional. However, they added that there were also some rather shocking evasions. The tax office levied a total of 1.8 billion in penalty taxes on cheaters.

Leading the list of tax dodgers were bar operators averaging 28 million, closely followed by restaurants with 27 million. One medical practitioner running a clinic reportedly was found routinely having made fake receipts. Bar owners were in most cases skimming money simply by making false reports that excluded part of their sales.
