Record number out of work, tourist woes cited

The unemployment rate on Okinawa reached the worst record at 9.4 percent in September, Prefectural officials announced Monday, prompting local media commentators concede that the ever-worsening trend never seems to stop. Officials cited the steep downturn in the number of tourists coming to Okinawa as one of the main reasons for the depressing figure. Both the Prefectural and national governments are ready to deploy a emergency campaign to counter the large number of tour cancellations to Okinawan destinations after the Sep. 11 terror attack in the U.S. The also said that the economic future of Okinawa stays invisible.
