Government officials try to calm beef scare

As the government decided to check entire beef cattle in Japan concerning the mad cow disease infection, the general manager of the Prefectural Department of Welfare and Health, Sachiko Shingaki made an official safety declaration, Thursday, stating that suspicious cattle would never be allowed into the market.

However, there is currently no way for consumers to make sure that the beef is tested. In addition, the Okinawa Prefecture does not intend to disclose to the public the results of the first tests since it would cause anxiety among the people if the results were positive.

Officials would also consider creating a sort of official certification, as people involved in production and distribution of beef are demanding.
