Producer of Okinawan pop stars nabbed for tax evasion

Date Posted: 2001-10-25

The 55-year-old former president of Rising Production Co. was arrested, Thursday, on charges of violating the corporation tax law. The Rising Production Co. has produced a number of Okinawan stars including Amie Namuro, DA PUMP, SPEED and MAX. The former president was questioned on suspicion of hiding income of over ¥2 billion over three-year period until 1999, and failing to pay the corporation tax of about ¥800 million.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, the company had reported fictional expenses in its balance sheet as expenses paid to affiliated companies, thus making the company’s total income look smaller than the actual amount.
