Nakijin Village fails to pay compensation

Date Posted: 2001-10-25

An eel farmer in Nakijin Village, who won a court case against the village, has not been able to collect the court-ordered compensation for his losses. The court had ruled that the village must pay ¥83 million.

The Naha District Court had ruled in July that a land reform project by the government had caused a large-scale death of the eels at the fish farm and ordered the Nakijin Village to pay the indemnity to the eel farmer. However the village has not accepted the responsibility claiming that the compensation is too large, and the way the court calculated the compensation is obscure. Officials also say that the village coffers have no money, adding that they would continue to fight in courts until a more favorable decision can be reached.
