Date Posted: 2001-10-25

An American manatee gave birth to a female calf on Saturday, Oct. 13 in an aquarium in the Okinawa Expo Park, Motobu Town. It is the forth baby manatee born in the aquarium, and the first time the mother has nursed her baby. Officials at the aquarium say that both are in good condition. However, they could not say when the newborn would be shown to the public.

According to aquarium officials, the baby is about 115 cm long and weighs 28 kg. Her mother is named Maya and the father is called Yukatan. Both were brought from Mexico. The director of the aquarium, Senzo Uchida said that his whole staff has high expectations for the baby, adding that she is the healthiest newborn he has ever seen. “I’m sure that she will grow up quickly,” Uchida said.
