White powder inside magazine causes scare

Date Posted: 2001-10-25

In the wake of worldwide anthrax scare, officials received an emergency call from the library of the University of the Ryukyus, Tuesday that a librarian had found white powder in a magazine that arrived at the library by mail. The library had received a September 9 issue of the New York Times Magazine it subscribes to that had been sent from New York by ship mail.

A 27-year-old female worker reportedly found some white powder attached to the first page as she opened the cover page.

Urasoe Police arrived and evacuated workers and students from the library, then riot policemen dressed in protective clothes collected the magazine, and took it for examination at the Prefectural Institute of Sanitary and Environment. The library would be closed until Friday when the test result is supposed to come out.

According to the police, the powder was fine flour-like substance, and it had no smell. The worker took a shower following the government manual and she is reportedly healthy.
