Ryukyu dance and music extravaganza held in Onoyama Park

This weekend festivities feature folk arts and music. The events concentrate around a stage in Onoyama Athletic Park in Naha City.

On Saturday, the program consists of two parts; the first features Okinawan folk music and dance performed by young folk musician from various parts of the island. The second part features several well-known Okinawa performers who have gained popularity by successfully mixing modern rock beats with traditional melodies. Performers include Ne-Ne’s, Rinken Band, MAX, Yui-Yui Sisters, Gen-chan Band and others.

The second day’s entertainment consists of modern and classic Ryukyuan dances. A bazaar featuring Okinawan products is open for business on both days.

Shimauta World
Date: Oct. 20, 1 – 8 p.m.
Place: Special Stage at Onoyama Athletic Field, Naha City

Part 1 - Ryukyu Music
3 – 5 p.m.
Young Okinawan folk musicians representing various parts of the island will bring you the nostalgic and heart-touching original music of Okinawa. Ending the program is the joyful “Kachashi” dance that everyone can join in.

Part 2 - The Shimauta (Island song), The New Wave
5:30 – 8 p.m.
A new mixture of traditional Ryukyu melodies and rock’n roll beat. The new wave will add a new page to the history of modern and mixed-style music of Okinawa. Performers include the Ne-Ne’s, Rinken Band and MAX.

The Matsuri & Dance
Date: Oct. 21, 1 – 8 p.m.
Place: Special Stage in Onoyama Athletic Park, Naha City

Part 1 - Okinawan Festival Of Folk Entertainment
3 – 5 p.m.
This show features the entire palette of the traditional Okinawan folk entertainment that has been handed down to the present from ancient days when Okinawans were performing for a rich harvest and protection from evil in their daily life.

Part 2 - Ryukyu Romance, Dance Of The Kingdom And People
5:30 – 8 p.m.
Energetic dances of common people and elegant classic dances of the royal Ryukyu court are performed by the best young dancers from various parts of the islands. A Taiko drum performance is included in the show.

Okinawan Bazaar
Date: Oct. 20 & 21, 1 – 8 p.m.
Place: Special Venue at Onoyama Athletic Park, Naha City

Popular bazaar offering Okinawan goods for sale, including traditional arts & crafts and health foods. Visitors can try their had at playing the Sanshin (three stringed instrument) and dance Eisa.
