Funny money lands Marine in jail in Naha

Date Posted: 2001-10-23

Naha Police arrested a 23-year-old Marine Corporal stationed at Camp Butler, Tuesday, on charges of using fake foreign currency. The corporal reportedly has admitted the charges. He reportedly brought nearly nine hundred fake U.S.$100 notes to a bank and tried to exchange them to yen.

According to a police investigation, the suspect tried to exchange 897 fake 100 dollar bills, Monday afternoon at the Bank of the Ryukyus, Naha Port Branch in Naha. A teller checked the bills with a testing machine because he noted that the printing was weak and irregular size. As the machine disapproved the notes, the man ran out and sped away in his car. However, the banker memorized the vehicle license number, and called the police. The suspect and his car were soon found in Tomari, Naha City, and he was arrested.
