Date Posted: 2001-10-23

Prefectural Police Department sent a police report on a 34-year-old police sergeant to Naha District Court, Monday, charging him with an assault as a member of special official corps resulting in a bodily injury. The sergeant was questioned for using excessive violence against an 18-year-old youth while patrolling motorcycle gangs. The sergeant was also suspended for three months.

According to the police investigation, the sergeant spotted the 18-year-old standing on the roadside, while patrolling the streets in search for motorcycle gangs, and concluded that the man was a member of a gang.

The policeman then knocked the man down with his knee on a near-by parking lot, and dragged him to another parking lot about 100 meters away. There the sergeant allegedly elbowed the man on the back. The man suffered injuries requiring ten daysí recovery.

The sergeant reportedly told investigators that he had mistakenly thought the man was a gang member, and given him a warning. However, he had become agitated up and used violence, as the man was defiant. In fact, the man had nothing to do with the gangs and was actually looking for his friendís motorcycle that had been stolen.

The Prefectural Police ordered the sergeantís commanders and another sergeant who was on duty with the suspect, to be officially admonished.
