Mad cow disease scare depresses cattle price

Date Posted: 2001-10-23

In the midst of the mad cow disease scare spreading in the nation, beef cattle were sold at an auction, Sunday, on Ishigaki Island. Ishigaki has the largest number of beef cattle in Okinawa.

According to sources at Ishigaki JA (agricultural cooperative), the average price dropped by nearly thirty percent compared to September. Adult cows were sold at nearly half price compared to the previous month.

Despite efforts by the auction organizers to emphasize that the cows in Yaeyama have all tested negative for the disease, great specimens of cows were sold at low prices, creating audible sighs in the market audience.
