Man arrested on insurance fraud charges

Date Posted: 2001-10-23

The Okinawa Prefectural Police Department, Gang Section, arrested a 54-year-old man, Friday morning, on charges of an attempted fraud.

According to the police, the suspect was questioned after attempting to collect insurance money by disguising himself as a victim of a traffic accident. He had reportedly cut his left wrist while in the Philippines, and claimed that he had been involved in a traffic accident.

Police investigators contend that the suspect tried to take advantage of the fact that accident investigation overseas is often less stringent compared to investigation of domestic accidents.

According to the investigation, the suspect allegedly cut his left wrist in March last year and sent a bill asking about 82 million in compensation from a insurance company in Okinawa. Three different insurance companies allegedly had insured the suspect at the time.

The case came to light when the insurance company had doubts and consulted the police. The police sent investigators to the Philippines last month to find the facts.
