Ministry of Environment lists nationís wetlands

Date Posted: 2001-10-23

The Ministry of Environment has released a list of five hundred most important wetland areas in the nation for the first time. The selected areas are large enough in size to be habitats for rare species of animals or migratory birds. 22 specialists in the field selected the wetland areas after making a thorough survey of animals inhabiting each environment.

The Ministry stated that the release of the list would not directly lead to legislation or other regulatory steps. However, the ministry said it eventually aims to designate those areas as nature preserves.

The areas are spread around the nation, with Hokkaido having the most, 61 areas, and Okinawa the second with 55 areas, including Manko mangrove area in Naha City and Awase tidelands, the site of a development project controversy.
